Cat column by supervising veterinarian Nyantosu: What is the correct way to feed cat food?

Commercially available cat food is labeled as "complete nutritional food," "general food," "therapeutic food," and so on.

・Complete nutritional food: Contains a balanced amount of nutrients to maintain your cat's health. ・General food: Highly palatable, so-called snacks. ・Therapeutic food: Food that supports treatment when your cat becomes ill.

"General food" alone cannot provide all the necessary nutrients, so it should only be given as a reward or for communication, and " complete nutritional food " should be chosen as the main food.
However, according to overseas research, there are some complete nutritional foods that do not actually meet the nutritional standards. We recommend food from a trusted major manufacturer (such as Royal Canin or Hill's).

Also, because therapeutic foods are highly effective, feeding them incorrectly can actually make your pet sick. They are easily available online or at home improvement stores, but owners should never feed them on their own judgment; always do so under the guidance of a veterinarian.

It's also not a good idea to feed the same food over and over again, as the nutrients and calorie needs of cats change significantly as they age. Generally, cats are most likely to gain weight around the age of 10, but once they reach the age of 14, their constitutions become more prone to losing weight. Ideally, you should gradually switch to higher-calorie cat food while assessing their weight and body shape.

As we get older, we may develop illnesses. It is best to have regular health checkups and consult with your doctor before deciding on your diet.
